Over the past few weeks, I’ve been struck by a real sense of optimism across the Highlands.
From the opening of the Gro For You Community Innovation Campus to conversations with leaders from the third sector, public sector and private businesses, one theme has continued to emerge: opportunity.
Not just opportunity for organisations, but opportunity for people, families and communities.
Creating Opportunities That Change Lives
After years of planning, collaboration and hard work, we officially opened the doors of the Gro For You Community Innovation Campus.
The response has been overwhelming. Parents, community groups and local businesses have shared their excitement about what the campus could mean for the region, with many describing it as life-changing.
One conversation, in particular, has stayed with me. A parent explained how the accessible facilities would transform life for her children and their entire family.
Moments like that remind us why projects like this matter.
They’re not simply new buildings or community facilities. They’re places that create opportunities, improve wellbeing and help people reach their potential.
Prevention Starts with Opportunity
Shortly after the opening, I had the privilege of speaking at this year’s Highland Third Sector Interface conference, where the theme was prevention.
It prompted an important question:
What does prevention really look like?
For me, prevention starts with opportunity.
It starts by giving people hope, purpose and a sense of belonging from an early age. When we invest in people before problems arise, we help build confidence, resilience and life skills that can support them throughout their lives.
These foundations don’t just benefit individuals. They strengthen families, create more resilient communities and help reduce pressure on essential public services.
Stronger Communities Through Collaboration
One of the most encouraging aspects of the conference was the opportunity to engage with colleagues from Public Health Scotland and organisations from across the third sector.
Although every organisation has a different role, we all share a common ambition: helping people build the foundations for healthier, happier lives.
Those conversations reinforced something I’ve always believed. Lasting change doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when organisations work together, share ideas and focus on the long-term needs of their communities.
Celebrating the Highlands’ Potential
The week also included discussions around Inverness’s City of Culture bid.
The Highlands are home to an incredible wealth of talent, creativity and innovation. Supporting and celebrating that potential could create lasting economic, cultural and social benefits, not just for Inverness but for communities across the region.
At a time when many people face significant challenges, initiatives like this provide something positive to rally behind while showcasing everything that makes the Highlands unique.
Investing in People
We were also delighted to welcome our friends from Sumitomo to the Gro For You Community Innovation Campus.
It was a pleasure to host them and share our vision for the future.
Projects like Gro For You simply wouldn’t be possible without businesses that are willing to invest in communities.
What was particularly encouraging was hearing that Sumitomo’s commitment extends beyond investing in infrastructure for the energy transition. They also recognise the importance of investing in people.
Their enthusiasm for exploring future collaboration and helping create a lasting legacy for Easter Ross and beyond demonstrates the difference genuine partnerships can make.
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Reflecting on the past few weeks, I’m encouraged by the number of conversations taking place across the Highlands.
We’ve brought together people from the third sector, public sector and private sector, all exploring how we can tackle shared challenges and create better outcomes for future generations.
Each organisation has a different role to play, but there’s a growing recognition that meaningful change happens when we work together.
That gives me real optimism.
Across the Highlands, there is a genuine sense of opportunity. An opportunity to invest in people, strengthen communities, celebrate creativity and build a brighter future for generations to come.
Most importantly, there is a willingness to collaborate, share ideas and create lasting impact.
